Today was a group trip to Chantilly, the chateau that invented whipped cream. The grounds were originally a hunt lodge for the French Royalty, known for its hounds and turf track racing. They still hold races there every first and third Sunday. The stables still stands and houses 30 performance horses, but unfortunately, I was unable to tour them, I was too late for the 'show' but too early to tour the stables. They do a dressage type of performance. The Chantilly Chateau was once a medieval, fortified chateau, hence the moat in the photos. The large white box vans were there because Jackie Chan is filming a movie. I did not walk the grounds as much as I would have liked, the cobblestone streets are doing my ankle in and walking for miles today would not have been a wise decision.
The Musee Conde, which is in the Chateau houses 2 Raphaels, and Ingres and several other great artists, as well as the original Tres Riches Heures, Duc de Berry; The book of Hours by the Limbourg Brothers.
The original is kept behind locked doors, but they have a facsimile on display that in its own right is a work of art.
